What is Ayahuasca?

Ayahuasca is a medicinal plant from the Amazon. Many people use ayahuasca ceremonially for reflection and personal insight; individual experiences vary and it is not a medical treatment.

What’s in Ayahuasca?

The active ingredients in Ayahuasca are powerful neurotransmitters that sensitize the right side of our brains (recognized as our creative side), facilitating a state of meditation that, in the indigenous vocabulary, is called a state of “pinta” (literally “to paint” in Spanish).

At the scientific level, Ayahuasca is composed of Dimethyltryptamine (DMT), armina, seratonin, and telepatina. These are powerful neurotransmitters that our brain produces naturally in three ways: when you’re sleeping, these are in charge of your dreams; when you meditate, these are in charge of giving you transcendental information; and when you have a near death experience, these are the ones showing you your life as it passes before you.

Ayahuasca is a powerful depurative; it purifies not only your physical body, but also your thoughts and your emotions. Because of this, it is a sacred and spiritual plant that is ideal, and highly effective, in treating maladies of the soul.

Ayahuasca does have real contraindications — see our Safety & Medical Screening page before considering a ceremony. Ayahuasca is an extremely powerful plant and its use should not be taken lightly without considering the situation, the location and the person with whom this ritual is celebrated.
